While most people flock to Florida in the winter for warm and sunny weather, opening day of Trawler Fest in Stuart, Florida brought temperatures in the 50's and driving rain. Fortunately, for visitors to the Kadey-Krogen Yachts the fully covered aft deck or 'back porch', allowed them to board quickly, shake off the rain, and immediately be comfortable from the elements n just one of many innovative qualities that set these trawlers apart from the others.
As the weekend continued the temperatures slowly began to rise ending with true Florida weather, 80's and sunny. By Saturday, windows, hatches, and pilothouse dutch doors were open, bathing the boats in natural light and fresh breezes. This environment, courtesy of Mother Nature, was a sales pitch in and of itself. The moods were lifted by all and the Trawler Fest crowds began to grow!
In addition to the Trawler Fest, PassageMaker Magazine offered PassageMaker University seminars which included a two day Women-Only Seamanship and Boat Handling Class. How appropriate that this seminar was held aboard the Krogen 48' North Sea 'Li Li', which was recently delivered to a single woman, her sole owner. The enthusiasm of this group was heard clear across the Marina as the ladies cheered each other on, causing heads to turn, as one by one they maneuvered 'Li Li' near fixed objects and then finally in and out of a slip with dozens of onlookers. 'It was a thrill to be with other women who enjoyed being behind the wheel. Patti gave us the opportunity to actually feel comfortable at the helm while having fun at the same time. I can't wait to get on my Krogen and hit the high seas!' says Cynthia Knight, a proud new owner of a Krogen 48' North Sea. 'This was such a joy to be a part of, says 'Li Li's' owner, Betty Robinson, 'Giving confidence so we can enjoy the dream- that's what it's all about!'
The ladies weren't the only ones benefiting from the University. Another seminar titled Ship's System Stem to Stern was a coed workshop lead by Steve D' Antonio. The goal of the seminar was for the attendees to gain knowledge and skills to have a more comprehensive understanding of the components in the engine room and how they operate. The course concluded in the engine room aboard the new Krogen 44' 'Ariel', where students were able to translate what they learned into hands-on practice. The Krogen 44' proved to be a perfect platform, having an engine room designed with easy inspection and maintenance in mind. 'The open space in the engine room and the knowledge communicated by the instructor made this course a success.' says Fred Pflaum, a University student and Krogen owner. Given the positive feedback we heard from attendees of all the seminars, those interested in a future Trawler Fest University should sign up early!
Lest one think a Trawler Fest is all work and no play, in conjunction with our 30th anniversary year, Kadey-Krogen Yachts sponsored a cocktail party for the dozens of Krogen owners who were in the area. The first of what will be many celebratory events, culminating in a four day 30th anniversary celebration at the Krogen Cruisers Rendezvous October 4-7 in Solomons, MD, the night was filled with excited conversation as many were eagerly awaiting the weather window to cross the gulf-stream and begin a winter of cruising.
And the list of 'family' members grew again this weekend with the sale of three, yes three, new Krogen 48' North Sea yachts. While many think the typical trawler owner is a retired sailor, these three prove otherwise. One of the couples is moving from an express cruiser, one is moving up from a Krogen 42' and the third is selling their home in the islands for a mobile tropical home.
